It is easier to sing than to speak.

That realisation was our inspiration behind Project Unsung.

Music as powerful as it is, can also be a mask. To unmask and destigmatize the act of speaking up about depression, we had to remove music itself.

Away from the bright lights, the beats, the melodies, the singing - lyrics are just words. For World Mental Health Day 2020, Warner Music and its artists from around the world simply recited the most heartfelt parts from their own songs, cold. Vulnerabilities laid out to bare.

The project was also featured live for an hour on a 24-hr virtual march for mental health hosted by United for Global Mental Health.

As Danish artist Soleima said - "For some reason it felt pretty intense sharing this video of myself saying the ‘Roses’ lyric out loud without any music, so let that be a small start for me".

On participating in the project, Nathan Hartono said, “I feel like even though the taboo is slowly being lifted on mental health, it’s still tough to talk about your feelings. I’ve definitely struggled to share my own emotions in the past and music has served as a great outlet to express myself. I hope that by opening up on the topic it encourages more people to do the same, and to understand that it’s ok to be vulnerable sometimes and share what might make us feel sad or depressed.”
